Shopify Ends Support for JavaScript Buy SDK – What Merchants Need to Do
March 31, 2025

Shopify has officially discontinued support for the JavaScript Buy SDK, following its deprecation announcement last year. Merchants using this SDK must transition to one of the available alternatives to ensure their ecommerce operations remain functional.

Key Deadline: July 1, 2025

Merchants must implement a migration plan before July 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM ET. After this date, customers will no longer be able to complete purchases through stores relying on the JavaScript Buy SDK.

Migration Options

Shopify has provided two alternatives for merchants to transition smoothly:

Recommended Option: Switch to the Storefront API Client

For the best performance and long-term support, merchants should migrate to the Storefront API Client. This solution offers:

  • Better performance and scalability – The API is globally deployed, ensuring faster and more reliable cart experiences.
  • Access to advanced features – Including subscriptions, product bundles, contextual pricing, and Shopify Functions.
  • Fully managed authentication – Simplifying integration and security for developers.

Switching to the Storefront API Client ensures that merchants can leverage the latest Shopify features and future updates.

Alternative Option: Upgrade to JavaScript Buy SDK v3.0

Merchants who wish to maintain their current setup with minimal changes can upgrade to JavaScript Buy SDK v3.0. However, this is the final release, and Shopify cannot guarantee future compatibility with new features. This option is only viable for use cases that remain supported by the Cart API.

Why This Change Matters

Shopify is continually evolving to provide merchants with scalable and high-performance solutions. The discontinuation of the JavaScript Buy SDK is part of this effort, pushing merchants toward more advanced and future-proof alternatives.

Failing to migrate by the deadline will result in customers being unable to complete purchases, which could significantly impact business operations.

Next Steps for Merchants

  1. Assess your current integration – Determine whether your store is using the JavaScript Buy SDK.
  2. Choose a migration path – Either switch to the Storefront API Client or upgrade to JavaScript Buy SDK v3.0.
  3. Implement changes before July 1, 2025 – Ensure your store remains operational before the deadline.

By making the switch now, merchants can avoid disruptions and take advantage of Shopify’s latest ecommerce innovations.
